enersave deregulation
What is deregulation and how does it affect you?
The electricity industry continues to change and evolve the way it delivers electricity to millions of consumers. As the industry is slowly deregulated and opened to competition, consumers are given the power to choose their electricity provider - much the same way they choose phone or cable providers.
Customers can now choose their retail supplier of electricity. While a customer's local distribution utility, often referred to as the "wires company," will continue to operate and maintain the wires to provide electricity to the customer's home, another company may be supplying the power. In Alberta, electricity deregulation occurred on January 1, 2001. Before then, one company provided generation, transmission, distribution and the sale of electricity to customers.
By reducing government control of the industry, it is believed that customers will ultimately benefit - by lowering prices and giving consumers the choice in who supplies their power.
